Director

directing1991-2011, SPECTACLE THEATRE, South Wales

He was the Artistic Director of the community theatre company Spectacle Theatre, specialising in work for young people.  His responsibilities included artistic leadership and programming, commissioning, casting and directing.

Since 1990, he has directed over sixty productions for Spectacle Theatre.  Most of these have been new writing or company devised work.  Through Spectacle Theatre, he developed international links with Ireland, Denmark, China, Friesland and Poland, resulting in a number of successful collaborations and co-productions.

He was also the Artistic Director of the Rhondda Cynon Taff Youth Theatre for three years, and these productions won three ‘Youth Work in Wales Excellence’ Awards. He is particularly proud of Just Desserts, a promenade theatre production created in partnership with Jeremi Cockram, where sixty young people using buses and land rovers transported the audience into the woods and house of Glyncornel.  This production set the standard for future work.

He has directed many critically acclaimed productions, including:

  • Over Milk Wood by Dic Edwards (1999) – now published in several languages and performed in America and Europe.
  • Kid by Dic Edwards (1997) – invited to perform this production at The Dublin Life Theatre festival and the Agor Drysau Festival in Wales.  Kid was published in 2005 by Argraff and acclaimed as a ‘classic of Welsh theatre’.
  • Bystanders by Jan Feldman (2001) – result of an international partnership with Tryater Theatre in Friesland.
  • The Lazy Ant by Mark Ryan (2001) – Winner of the Best Production Award at the Shanghai Theatre Festival in 2007.
  • Good For Nothing by Paul Swift (2002) – An “excellent, thought-provoking production”.
